Leinster vs Northampton Saints Match Preview

Leinster and Northampton will both be looking to re-live past glories when they go head-to-head in this season's Heineken Cup Final at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff on Saturday.

The Irish province are the most recent of the two to have tasted success in Europe's premier club competition having seen off the challenge of Leicester Tigers in 2009 but the Saints also boast significant pedigree having account for Munster in the 2000 tournament finale.

Leinster, who are chasing an unprecedented Magners League-Heineken Cup double, enter the clash as favourites having emerged from a 'pool of death' featuring Clermont Auvergne, Racing Metro and Saracens before proving too strong for the Tigers once again in the quarter-finals. But they saved their most impressive display for defending champions Toulouse who were sent packing in the semi-finals.

Foster quiet on Lauaki reports

Chiefs coach Ian Foster has refused to comment on reports that troubled loose forward Sione Lauaki has signed for Top 14 giants Clermont Auvergne.

Reports in Midi Olympique suggested that the 17-cap All Black has signed with Clermont, who are coached by Kiwi Vern Cotter. Foster was tight-lipped at training prior to the Chiefs' final Super 14 game of the season.

"I have nothing to say because I don't know," he said. "I'm more than happy to answer questions once it's formalised, if indeed it is formalised. It's been a complicated two or three weeks for him. It hasn't been easy for him, but he's okay."

Clermont director of sport Jean Marc Lhermet confirmed that the club had been following Lauaki for some time and that the player wants to "revive his career in France".

"He's a player that we've been following for a long time," he told Midi Olympique. "He wants to revive his career in France, and it is a great opportunity for the club to sign a player of the kind of calibre we are looking for. He'll boost our squad with penetrating runs and power. We're very happy to have such a player. He's had a remarkable Super 14 season."

Thompson delighted with Scotland call-up

Jim Thompson celebrated his call up to the Scotland squad for this summer's tour of Argentina by paying tribute to his injured rival Chris Paterson.

The Edinburgh fullback was yesterday named in a 27-man party for the two-match series in Tucuman on June 12 and Mar del Plata a week later. Thompson was the only uncapped player selected as Andy Robinson stuck by the 22 involved in the morale-boosting upset of Ireland in their final Six Nations clash in March.

Thompson, 25, was selected after a number of impressive performances for Edinburgh while his team-mate Paterson remains sidelined with a kidney injury suffered during the Six Nations loss to Wales in February. But Thompson was full of praise for his 32-year-old rival and the influence he has had on his own development.

"It's great to be involved," added Thompson. "We had a couple of unlucky defeats in the Six Nations and a great win against Ireland to finish. It's definitely something the boys are very proud of and something to carry on in Argentina."

Scotland squad: Backs: Mike Blair (Edinburgh), Chris Cusiter (Glasgow Warriors, captain), Simon Danielli (Ulster), Nick De Luca (Edinburgh), Max Evans (Glasgow Warriors), Phil Godman (Edinburgh), Alex Grove (Worcester Warriors), Sean Lamont (Scarlets), Rory Lawson (Gloucester), Graeme Morrison, Dan Parks (both Glasgow Warriors), Hugo Southwell (Stade Francais) and Jim Thompson (Edinburgh)

Forwards: John Barclay, Johnnie Beattie, Kelly Brown (all Glasgow Warriors), Alasdair Dickinson (Gloucester), Ross Ford (Edinburgh), Richie Gray (Glasgow Warriors), Jim Hamilton, Allan Jacobsen (both Edinburgh), Alastair Kellock (Glasgow Warriors), Scott Lawson (Gloucester), Moray Low (Glasgow Warriors), Alan MacDonald (Edinburgh), Euan Murray (Northampton Saints) and Alasdair Strokosch (Gloucester).
